Let’s crush the stigma surrounding mental health issues

I have a few passions apart from wine and good food etc 🙂 Saving the orangutan and creating awareness of palm oil and rainforest destruction issues, creating awareness of mental health experiences, particularly Borderline Personality Disorder which is still little known about by the general public, and trying to crush the stigma surrounding mental health issues.  There are more but these are some of the most important ones in my eyes.

I have been the victim (don’t like to use that word but it is the best one) in many ways  – from family, friends, my GP, psychiatrists, NHS and others.  When I wanted help I got blanked, when I pretended I was fine I was incorporated.  It doesnt make sense.  My psychiatrist told my ex-boyfriend that i would be ‘very difficult to live with’ and that he shouldnt molly coddle my moods.  All because I had Borderline personality disorder, one of the most stigmatised and least known about mental disorders.  But 10% of sufferers commit suicide so those psychiatrist who believe it doesnt exist on the other hand are also wrong.  They have little idea that is all.  As a writer, I embarked on a few college courses and writing retreats but when looking to appy for a particular course in Spain I realised I couldnt, because I was on medications and had mental ilnesses.  I could understand why they wouldnt want to risk issues occurring for other guests but they ‘painted us all with the same brush’ as it were.

I will be adding more stuff about stigma on my site but for now, please peruse these articles:

Some ideas on how to help break the stigma surrounding mental health issues  I wrote it in 2009, but am always coming up with more ideas 🙂

In April 2011 I wrote about why we should help dissolve the stigma surrounding mental health issues  let’s keep campaigning 🙂
