Welcome to Amanda Green’s website

My Alien self my journey back to me Amanda Green e book cover march 2012 My name is Amanda Green (pseudonym), I was born and live in England, UK,  and I set up this website and wrote two memoirs and one self-help book to share with my readers the stories of my issues with mental illness, therapy and recovery. I also write thought provoking, inspiring fiction with the theme of overcoming adversities (abuse, homelessness, mental health, relationships and more)

Join my MAILING LIST‘ by clicking the link on the right hand side of this website.

Subscribe to Amanda Green author by email and you will receive an email each time I publish a new article to the site, to keep you up to date.

I regularly post blogs about coping strategies, inspirational things to do, Borderline Personality disorder, depression, Obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety/panic attacks, thyroid issues, eating disorders (Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia), alcohol and drug abuse, sexual abuse/rape, Quetiapine (Seroquel anti-psychotics) and Citalopram (anti-depressant), therapies such as Cognitive behavioural therapy and paranoia, dissociation and psychosis – all of which I have experienced in one way or another either myself or those I know.  Also info on mental health charities, forums,  campaigns, the stigma surrounding mental illness, some of my personal experiences, celebrities with mental health issues and mental health in the family.

My logo is a locked box and this is because one of the main things I had to do to heal myself was to deal with adverse things that have happened to me in my past and my aim was to put them in a ‘pandoras box’, close the lid on them and lock them away, so that I could forgive and forget the past and concentrate on the future.

I realised that holding onto the past was harming me in the present time and it had to stop. Therefore, I decided this would be an apt logo for me to share and be recognised with. Plus green is for ‘go’ (‘go for it’ I thought) and is also my pen name.

You will see the main feature on the ‘My Alien Self : My Journey Back to Me’ book cover is a keyhole in keeping with the locked away bad memories theme…

My mum – from Schizophrenia to Dementia in 60 years

Let me start by saying I have not edited this post. It was enough to write it than to re-read it and make any corrections…

I want to share with you a little of my ongoing journey with my mum’s mental illness. Her and my dad’s 60th

mum and I Dec 2015 (a rare smiley photo of my mum)

mum and I Dec 2015 (a rare smiley photo of my mum)

wedding anniversary came and went last week. The day was all good until mum turned, and began shouting in the shop and refusing to move.

Sixty years ago, my mum was sectioned, and taken to a psychiatric hospital for a year. She was diagnosed with catatonic schizophrenia. Whatever they did to her, including electric shock treatments and medications (I shall never know the full extent of her treatments), she didn’t know who my dad was when he visited and she had to learn about living again. At first, she was like a child, being taught how to buy something in a shop. She never did get to a fully responsible adult stage, but had four children, of which I was the last and the only girl.

We were a dysfunctional family and have all suffered in one way or another for our experiences. There has always been lots of anger, resentment etc thrown at us by mum; dad receiving most of it. I felt sorry for her but often hated

Self care is important

Life hasn’t been easy lately, but I have some very tough times ahead; they’ve actually begun already. So, I have made a self-care list to hopefully ensure I will look after myself during the processes, combat any loneliness that may occur, and can give my support to the people who need it, without drinking myself into a stupor!

Back to the gym for swimming and yoga, doing my physio back exercises, getting out to coffee shops to do some of my editing and writing, relaxing with films and documentaries, seeing friends, gardening and more. I’ve started some of them already and decided to post this so that it encourages me to keep it up; no sympathy please.

We must always look after ourselves in order to be able to look after others. x

Assumptions, and why they can be so negative for ourselves and our relationships

‘Assumption’ – something that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof.

We can believe many things, and make them our stories, but it doesn’t make them true.

We can believe things from:

  • our own imagination
  • our own ideas
  • our judgements of others’
  • our judgements of ourselves (we can project our judgements on others and think they think they think that of us)
  • because someone said so…

There are many more, but you get the gist.

The problem is, that if they are just assumptions, based on no proof at all, then we are on dangerous ground, for:

  • Accusing others’ of things they haven’t done
  • Spreading rumours that aren’t true
  • Hurting ourselves with presumed judgements of what people think about us
  • Making decisions based on untruths

This could result in:

  • Libel
  • Broken relationships, in family, friendships or love.
  • Low self-esteem, anxiety, depression…
  • Bullying
  • Impulsiveness
  • Bad decisions
