Self-esteem, self-image and summer – how is it for you?

Summer is well and truly on its way. But, for many, summer brings new stressors.

enjoy yourself!

enjoy yourself!

The sun is shining, it’s getting warmer and brighter; what more could we want? Why could it make us feel low and anxious?

How we perceive how we look. Especially when comparing to others.

I personally spend the latter weeks of the winter looking forward to the time I can stop wearing thick socks, boots, big coats, and all the other layers of clothes I wear to keep warm. I look forward to turning the heating off and saving on the electric bills. I look forward to being able to have the windows open and let in the lovely fresh air; all my plants sprouting and flowering outside. There are many things to look forward to.

And it’s all good until I drag out my summer clothes and start trying them on. First, my legs need a shave and will need upkeep all summer if I want to wear shorts, dresses and skirts. Ugh! Then I see my skin has changed a bit in the last year, as I try on short shorts, and I consider buying longer ones or smarter ones. Some things don’t suit me anymore because I’ve changed my look; my hair style or colour, or more tattoos. So that means selling them and having to shop to buy more. Then I wonder if I am too old to wear certain things, like that little short playsuit at 45 years old!

So, the warm weather finally arrives, and everyone, like me, tries out their summer clothes in public…

For some, this causes issues. The comparisons start, when looking at younger, thinner women looking cute, or those with smooth thighs, or those who are free enough of mind to wear what they want regardless. The jeans come back out, the vests are swapped for t-shirts and the sweltering begins because of the fear of wearing more suitable clothes. Sometimes, even socialising is avoided in the summer because of it.

But if we can embrace ourselves as individuals, in mind, soul AND body, we can overcome this. No-one is perfect. No-one. It does not exist. Punishing ourselves mentally, for how we feel we look, is not what we deserve. We need to embrace social events, fun and freedom. Be mindful. Use your five senses to be in the moment and enjoy yourself. Taste, touch, sound, sight and smell. Tap into them and make the most of each day, leaving the negative thinking behind.

So, do whatever you want this summer and thereafter. No-one can do it for you. Take control of yourself and dress how you want to, enjoy yourself and live life.
