I will keep this brief, but since I have been suicidal more times than I can remember, ‘World Suicide prevention day’ is very close to my heart. Feeling suicidal is the worst place to be on the planet, regardless of what is going on around you, real or imagined. It is a darker place than a tunnel with all the lights out.
I have been lucky to have the strength to get past these thoughts and feelings in the past – some are not so lucky. Rich, poor, seemingly happy – it happens, sometimes, to the most obviously unhappy victims, but all too many times to people who one would never ever imagine were feeling bad in any way.
Suicide can be stopped. Support and knowledge are key to helping someone with mental health problems and, as I always say, STIGMA is bad! Stigma can kill, really it can. Those going through mental illness need support, understanding; people who care, not people who scold or invalidate. (see my article on invalidation by CLICKING HERE - opens in a new window)
So, here’s to ‘World Suicide Prevention Day’ – My best wishes to all those doing something to mark the day, all those who have ever felt suicidal and all those who support them!
Take Care,
Amanda

I have also been suicidal more times than I can count and like you, I’m bringing awareness throughout Suicide Prevention Week on my blog!
