The grass is always greener and be careful what you wish for - two old adages that speak the truth and act as a warning

Coming out of lockdowns etc, and making the journey into a new way of living that we will all have to do, gives us the chance to appreciate and keep what is good for us, and not go back to old things that did not work for us pre-pandemic. Have a good ‘check in’ with yourself and embrace the changes.

But, keep a few things in mind…

‘The grass is greener’ is an assumption or expectation that something we do not currently have would make us happy, content and fulfil our lives if we did have it.

The grass is greener

“If you were a better husband, my life would be better”

“If I had a bigger house my life would be complete”

“If I lived in a different town I would be happier”

“If I had a better boss my life would be easier”

“If I had……. my life would be better/I’d be happier…”

How would you fill in the blanks?

But how do we know what would make us happy if we’ve never had it?

Do we need to change people for starters? No.

This kind of thinking usually continues even if the big thing is achieved. When we get what we want, whether it does what we wanted it to or not, something else pops into our head that we think will make things even better, make us even happier etc. The cycle continues.

And what about the error in this thinking? What about when we get what we think will make us happy or complete and it doesn’t anyway? Again, it will often be replaced by the idea of something else that will make all the difference to our lives.

And what about the mistakes made when we are not careful what we wish for? We get the thing, the person or the change and it makes our life much worse? Or leads to a worsening situation?

At the end of the day, it pays to carefully consider what we want from life, what is most important and why, but bear in mind that materialistic items or trying to make someone change themselves into how we want them to be might not be the way to go!

Having goals is a good thing, having drive is a good thing, and achieving is good; just make sure you are striving for the right things, as being content with some things or people we already have (just as they are) is also a good thing. 🙂
